Neurodegenerative diseases exhibit a silent and prodromal phase where changes in connectivity and neuronal physiology occur with no overt manifestation of symptoms Nevertheless, the brain is able to cope with those changes counteracting suboptimal neuronal functioning A critical question is how to identify these adaptive responses, and why at a certain moment these responses fail. My talk will focus on my recent studies aimed to uncover early endogenous neuroprotective mechanisms and the crosstalk between pathological and adaptive responses in the onset and progression of diseases such as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( and Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA 1).
