Human-Robot Interaction and Theory of Mind from a Developmental Perspective

During the seminar, the state of the art of the use of humanoid robots in psychological research will be shown within the theoretical framework of Theory of Mind studies, considering some of the key phases of development. Although there are still many open technological questions, in the mid-long term it is plausible that robots will prove to be very important to perform many tasks that require interaction with a human partner. Ideally, the robotic partner should be able to learn from past experiences and flexibly adapt its behavior to produce responsive and appropriate feedback to the human. This last skill is strongly associated with Theory of Mind ablities that are involved in relational dynamics. Research has shown that Theory of Mind skills are activated in interactions with robots, although they do not possess them.
